Thomas Tallis
trans. by Scott Vaillancourt

This is an early work of a composer who has been said to represent the full flowering of Renaissance music in England. Its well crafted
imitative polyphony lends itself well to the majestic sound of the trombone ensemble.

In Memoriam - Richard James
for Solo Bass Trombone and Trombone Trio
Paul Hunt

Cat.#30293
$12.00
|
This bass trombone feature commemorates a good friend and colleague who
died of AIDS at the age of 42. Fine contemporary writing around the bass trombone solo using standard
techniques and straight mutes. The belled tones in the muted parts should be very rhythmic and are an
integral part of the piece. Solemn but effective.

Duration 6 minutes.

La Mi La Sol
Heinrich Isaac
trans. Scott Vaillancourt

Cat.#30263
$10.00
|
Originally composed in 1502 for the Emperor Maximilian, this ingeniously
constructed piece is an excellent study of late medieval/early renaissance motivic development and
part writing. Its gradually intensifying rhythmic structure and open harmonies lend themselves well
to colors of a trombone ensemble.

Tosto che L'alba
Gherardello da Firenze
arr. Scott Vaillancourt
Cat.#30261
$10.00
|
This fourteenth century Florentine caccia or chase uses canons, hockets,
and horn calls to describe a medieval hunt. Originally for two equal voices and an instrumental tenor,
this arrangement is not only a good way for trombonists to learn some medieval music but also it is
great fun to play.

Two Pieces
Heinrich Isaac
trans. James Wehr

Cat.#30116
$10.00
|
Renaissance composer Isaac's music is of a very international character
and flavor. The first is called Between Mountain and Deep Valley and was originally written for four
voices as a German part song. Canzona, the second, was written for unspecified instruments according
to the practice of the time. Both of the pieces foreshadow the Baroque fugue in the manner in which
the opening themes are presented to the listener. The dynamics do not appear in the original manuscripts
and are editorial here.

Bonafide
George Chave

Cat.#30323
$15.00
|
A quartet by this award winning composer is a great example of contemporary
writing which shows a good balance between parts. It's lyrical at times, and then jocular with mixed
meter. Works both as a single quartet or expanded group. Good for any program.

Quartet in Four Movements
for Four Trombones
Jack Normain Kimmell

Cat.#30327
$17.00
|
This piece in a contemporary idiom is ideal for an advanced college group or
professional players. The tenor clef is used in the first and second trombone parts. The movements are
allegro ma non troppo, poco largo con espressione, andante no troppo, allegro con energia. There is
much use of counterpoint in each movement. Each part is independent and important; no part serves as
an accompaniment. The melody often moves from part to part. The entire work is strongly rhythmic. The
way the polytonality is used makes the work harmonically rich with shifting tonal centers and strong
tonal endings.

Duration 10 minutes
