The piece opens with descending accented octaves which exuberantly ring out like bells. The middle section wanders darkly and mysteriously through chromatic passages. The next sections are marked contemplative and fanciful, finally ending with frenzied sffz octaves and chords.

Description
Fantasy on a Theme by Francisco for Solo Piano
Seymour Bernstein
The Fantasy was commissioned by the Music Teachers Association of California. The opening eight note theme in the left hand belongs to “Balloons,” a choral work by Francisco J. Nunez. The piece opens with descending accented octaves which exuberantly ring out like bells. The middle section wanders darkly and mysteriously through chromatic passages. The next sections are marked contemplative and fanciful, finally ending with frenzied sffz octaves and chords. This is an excellent contemporary etude with similar techniques to some of the Chopin etudes. This piece is “a must” for contemporary festivals.
