Written for solo trumpet with optional amplification, Refrain utilizes the spatial and sonic differences between the acoustic and the amplified trumpet to create two independent sounds of contrasting characteristics. The sections go from aggressive 16th and 32nd notes passages with trills to some scant notes with mutes marked dark, distant, mysterious. Dr. Browning is a former trumpeter with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
