A Sense of Acadia CD for Piano Solo
Barbara Smith
Acadia National Park is situated on Mt. Desert Island off the coast of Maine and is one of the most visited national parks in the United States. It is a beautiful place where the ocean meets wave-eroded granite cliffs, sandy beaches and woods of fir and spruce. There are many lakes, ponds and streams, and the mountains and paths add to a huge array of recreational activities. The composer lives about an hour from the park and she spends a lot of time there. All of the pieces in this collection were inspired by places in the park. The music is tonal with lovely “down home” melodies. The chord changes are named both by letter and by function as this is a good book to work on progressions such as I vi ii V I. Most of the pieces have the melody in the right hand over an arpeggiated bass. The titles of the pieces are: Sunrise Over Frenchman’s Bay, Sreene Moments, Changing Tides, Woods Walk, Schoodic Surf, Spellbound, Drifting Leaves, Acadian Sunset, Fog Among the mountains, Otter Point Reveie, Autumn Glory, Wave Tag
