Haydn composed this concerto per il clarino in 1796 for the trumpet virtuoso Anton Weidinger. The piece exhibited the chromatic possibilities of the keyed trumpet. It has remained a popular piece to this day. The solo is played by one of the quintet members and the remaining four players play the orchestral accompaniment. This piece works well on any program.
