Description
Topiary for Solo Piano
Harold Meltzer
Award-winning composer Meltzer is the director of Sequitur, a contemporary music ensemble based in New York City. This work was commissioned by a California music teacher and is a collection of six short pieces based on challenging rhythm patterns. Each piece has a clear-cut design or figure, thus the title. The first piece is a theme and two variations made from repetitions of five 2-note chords. Chains of 2-note chords make up an obsessive accompaniment in the second piece. The third and sixth pieces constantly change pace through the addition or subtraction of beats of silence between notes. The fourth piece is very lyrical, and parallel chords dominate the fifth piece.
