Cosmic Encounters
Twelve Interplanetary Etudes on the Intervals for the Intermediate Terrestrial Piano

Jon Grief

Grier’s objectives for writing these pieces was to provide twelve concert-worthy pieces in a modern idiom; to have the student develop a basic aural and theoretical awareness of intervals, and for them to develop some basic techniques of analysis. Each piece emphasizes one of the 12 chromatic intervals. This is done mostly with melodic materials, though harmonic means are also used. Each piece has an accompanying page of theory questions and/or exercises about the intervallic relationships, structural elements or motivic development. Grier asks the student to imagine being a member of the crew on the first manned mission to explore Titan. As the intervals get larger, their distance from Earth will increase. These pieces would be great for a cosmic theme recital. They could also be used in a group class with discussions about the intervals. There is an appendix listing inversions of the intervals. The titles of the pieces are: Countdown, Weightless, Red Storm, Asteroids, Solar Wind, Chipwatt the Robot, Jovian Moondance, King of the Heavens, Full Tilt, Jewel in the Void, Computer Chaos, Titan.
