Description

Insects Book I for Solo Piano

Seymour Bernstein

Seymour Bernstein wrote these pieces while living in a rustic setting in coastal Maine. He learned (reluctantly) to share his residence with a multitude of crawling and flying creatures. Each piece is a creative tone poem. As in many of Seymour’s works, there is an excellent pedagogical lesson. The Centipede is a study in varying articulations between the hands and long lines of sixteenth notes. The Carpenter Ant is a study in coloristic effects. The Mosquito is an excellent trill study, and The Cockroach is an etude for the turning under of the thumb in scale passages and in shorter figurations. Seymour gives excellent suggestions on each piece in the preface.
