The Theme, 18 Variations and a Finale comprise this excellent set of tonal variations. This work is a good introduction to the variation form; each variation is short, and there are many different musical ideas and techniques. The famous theme is stated with the melody in the right hand and chords in the left. The chord changes are given as a model for the rest of the variations. Some of the variations are arpeggiated; staccato against legato studies; lyrical 6/8 versions; double thirds staccato; inversion of the theme; fast sixteenth note passages; solo for the left hand; alternating hands studies; invention in the style of Bach; prelude with Chopin in mind; a quasi-Liszt etude; Sehnsucht with Schumann in mind; a quasi-Brahms intermezzo; and the grand finale. There is a chart included that lists all of the keys, time signatures, form, tempos and performing suggestions.
