Three Fanfares for Brass Quintet
Daniel Black
The three fanfares are intended for advanced high school and college performers. Each has a different harmonic language, but all are at least somewhat tonal. Processional is a majestic march that is quite tonal and makes some use of counterpoint. Malyenkiy Fanfare takes its name from the Russian word for little- uses freely tonal/ polytonal harmonic material, and has more of a contrast between the slower introduction and the upbeat allegro middle section. Avanti! is a waltz with attitude that uses mostly fourth-chord (ala Hindemith) harmony.
