The three fanfares are intended for advanced high school and college performers. Each has a different harmonic language, but all are at least somewhat tonal.
Haydn composed this concerto per il clarino in 1796 for the trumpet virtuoso Anton Weidinger. The piece exhibited the chromatic possibilities of the keyed trumpet.
The fanfare is in 6/8 and switches to 2/8 and 3/8 using forceful rhythms. The Toccata is in cut time and has long legato lines marked flowing with energy.
An elegant arrangement for brass, this stately contemporary piece is most appropriate for weddings and other ceremonial engagements. Terrific concert opener, too.
